Honest numbers: what do you really earn with AI content?
What do you really earn with AI copy, AI video, UGC ads, your own channel or a newsletter? Rates, platform rules, costs and what faceless courses don't tell you.
In short
The fastest money is in client work: a Dutch freelance copywriter charges €78 per hour on average, 'AI-assisted writing' €75 (Knab 2026). Your own channel takes months: YouTube only pays after 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 watch hours (or 10 million Shorts views) and a review, and mass production with AI is excluded. With paid newsletters, a median 0.62% of readers become paying subscribers.

With AI you can make ten videos in an afternoon. Everyone can do that now, which is why almost nobody pays for ten videos any more. They do pay for someone who knows which video works.
After this lesson you’ll know: what client work pays, why your own channel takes so long, what it costs and which promises you can ignore.
What you really earn
Section titled “What you really earn”There are two routes, with very different timelines.
Route A: content for clients (copy, UGC ads, short video, thumbnails)
| Rate | |
|---|---|
| Copywriter NL, average | €78 per hour excl. VAT (Knab 2026) |
| “AI-assisted writing” | €75 per hour |
| Copywriter profit 2025 | €50,846 at 23 billable hours per week |
| Human UGC video (international) | median ±$175 ⚠ (a provider’s blog) |
Striking: according to Knab, starters charge €80 on average and experienced copywriters €77. So experience alone doesn’t automatically raise your rate (Knab does warn that this gap also comes from the make-up of the group).
Route B: your own channel or newsletter
- YouTube: ad money only after 1,000 subscribers + 4,000 watch hours in 12 months, or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days, plus a review (by systems and people). From Shorts you keep 45% of your share of the pool. New YPP terms apply from 1 February 2027.
- RPM (revenue per 1,000 views): no official figures. Blogs give $2-4 for gaming up to $10-40 for finance, and differ up to 7x for the same niche ⚠.
- TikTok Creator Rewards: according to external sources not available in the Netherlands (as of September 2026, ⚠).
- Paid newsletter (beehiiv, June 2026): a median 0.62% of free readers start paying, at $10 per month. So for 10 paying subscribers you need ±1,600 subscribers.
The market: more demand, lower prices
Section titled “The market: more demand, lower prices”- On Upwork, earnings for AI video rose 329% (2025 vs. 2024, US clients).
- But per job for generative AI and creative production, earnings fell 13%, while the number of jobs grew 90% (Upwork, July 2026).
- Uploading AI music for streams? At Deezer, more than half of daily uploads are AI, accounting for only 1-3% of streams (uploads: July 2026; streams: April 2026).
Cheap one-off work (“write 10 blogs”) is shrinking. Work with strategy, editing and brand voice holds its price.

What it costs
Section titled “What it costs”Not much (as of November 2026):
| Tool | Price per month |
|---|---|
| Text + images (free tiers + one subscription) | €0-30 |
| ElevenLabs (voice) | from $6 |
| HeyGen (avatars) | Creator $29 |
| beehiiv (newsletter) | free tier |
AI video or UGC quickly costs €30-100 per month in credits. Note: with Suno Free you get no commercial rights to your music.
How long until your first euro?
Section titled “How long until your first euro?”- Client work: days to weeks via your network, if you have a portfolio (our estimate).
- Newsletter: the median creator launches a paid subscription after 45 days (beehiiv). How long it takes to get the first paying subscriber, beehiiv doesn’t measure.
- YouTube: there is no reliable median figure for the time to monetisation. Count on months, not weeks.
Why it goes wrong
Section titled “Why it goes wrong”- Demonetisation. YouTube excludes “mass-produced” and “repetitive” content, for the whole channel.
- Wrong platform. TikTok Creator Rewards appears not to be available in NL ⚠.
- Price pressure on one-off AI jobs.
- Churn. Paid AI newsletters lose 13.33% of their paying subscribers per month, one of the leakiest categories.
- False positives. In summer 2026, YouTube even wrongly flagged Kurzgesagt as AI slop ⚠.
What courses promise vs. the data
Section titled “What courses promise vs. the data”- “Start a faceless AI channel and earn within 5 days” (Automate Channels ⚠). Data: impossible via ads. The eligibility threshold plus review alone takes longer.
- “Mass production is the business model.” Data: YouTube literally names channels that read out “repetitive AI generated imagery” with an AI script as spam.
- “Look at my results” (courses from $797 to $995 ⚠). Data: the sellers themselves add “These results are not typical”.
Should you start?
Section titled “Should you start?”Yes, if you already have a feel for language, visuals or ads, and you use AI as an accelerator in client work. That makes money fastest.
No, if you’re hoping for passive income from a channel full of AI videos. That’s exactly what the platforms are now filtering out. Still want your own channel? Do it about something you’re credible on, and count on months.
