Freelance rate calculator (Netherlands, 2026)

Calculate what you keep from your hourly rate as a Dutch freelancer in 2026, or which rate you need for the income you want. Using the real tax rules.

In short

At €85 per hour, 1,100 billable hours and €8,000 costs, a Dutch freelancer keeps roughly €4,795 net per month in 2026 (without pension or disability insurance). Assume fewer billable hours than you think: a lot of time goes to sales and admin.

Most starters calculate their rate by dividing their old salary by 160 hours. That is the fastest route to earning too little: you don’t bill all your hours, you pay your own pension and holidays, and tax works differently than in a job.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours a year can I really bill?

Far fewer than 40 hours a week. Part of your time goes to sales, admin and learning. According to the Knab rates booklet 2026, copywriters for example bill 23 hours a week on average. Start cautiously, around 1,000 to 1,200 hours a year.

What is the hours criterion (urencriterium)?

You must spend at least 1,225 hours a year on your business (not just billable hours) to qualify for the self-employed deduction (€1,200 in 2026) and the starter deduction (€2,123).

Do I need to charge VAT?

Usually yes: 21% on top of your rate. If your revenue stays under €20,000 a year, you can opt for the small business scheme (KOR) and not charge VAT.
