Honest numbers: what do you really earn with AI automation?

What do you really earn with AI automation for small businesses? Marketplace rates, Dutch hourly rates, costs, time to your first client and what courses don't tell you.

In short

On Upwork, the median hourly budget for AI automation is about $30 and the median fixed-price job $150 (May 2026). If you sell directly to Dutch small businesses, you'll see hourly rates of €60-120 (marketplace and agency sources), but as a beginner you start lower. Our estimate: part-time and without a network, your first paying client takes 3 to 9 months.

Building workflows that save business owners hours a week: that’s real work that real money is paid for. Just not the €5,000 per client you see in ads.

After this lesson you’ll know: what you realistically earn, what it costs, how long it takes and whether you should start.

The big difference is where you sell.

Not much. That’s the good news, and also why there’s a lot of competition.

Item Cost (as of November 2026)
n8n Cloud Starter €20 per month (billed annually)
Self-hosted n8n €0 licence + VPS of ±€6-12 per month
Zapier / Make free tier (100 tasks / 1,000 credits per month)
KvK registration (Dutch Chamber of Commerce) €85.15 one-off
Professional liability insurance ±€25-70 per month ⚠

The real cost is maintenance. APIs change, connections expire and n8n 3.0 (now in beta) drops old nodes. If that isn’t in your price, you’re working for free.

There is no independent data. What does circulate (“30-90 days”) comes from sales blogs without a method.

Our estimate:

  • No network, part-time (5-10 hours per week): 3 to 9 months.
  • You already work in a sector and know people there: 1 to 3 months.
  • €1,000 per month net: 6 to 18 months.
  1. No niche. “I do AI automation” doesn’t sell. “Fewer no-shows for physiotherapists” does.
  2. Building too cheap, maintaining for free. Every broken little integration eats your margin.
  3. Selling AI instead of results. Business owners buy time and leads, not technology.
  4. Racing to the bottom on marketplaces. You can’t win against $150 jobs if you have to live in euros.
  5. Platform risk. Pricing models and licences change (Make switched to credits).

The market is still early: of Dutch micro-businesses (2-10 employees), 13.8% use AI (CBS, 2025). That leaves room, but you’ll have to explain it to every client.

  • “Your first client within 90 days or your money back” (Maker School, $184 per month, as of November 2026). Data: no independent figures. The terms of that guarantee aren’t on the sales page. Ask for them before you pay.
  • “€5,000-10,000 per client is normal.” Data: the median fixed-price job on Upwork is $150, and only 22 of the 1,266 fixed-price job posts were $10,000 or more.
  • “AI agents = get rich quick.” Data: in March 2026 Air AI settled with the FTC: the company may no longer sell “business opportunities”. According to the FTC, it promised buyers they would earn back “tens of thousands of dollars within days or months”.

Dutch trainings of €749 to €5,500 excl. VAT ⚠ teach you the tools, without an income promise. But they don’t teach you to sell either.

Yes, if you like thinking in processes, want to talk to business owners and already know a sector somewhere. Start-up costs are low and demand is growing.

No, if you mainly want to build and not sell. Then you compete on Upwork against $30 per hour. In that case, pick another niche, or use automation in your own job first.
